Here are the two powders I finally settled on for my own use :
For cloth nappies/childrens clothes
- 1 cup Baking Soda
- 1 cup Washing Soda
- 1 cup Baking Soda
- 1 cup Washing Soda
- 1 cup Borax
I also put a good dose of white vinegar in the softener holder :)
Other people have used the previously posted laundry powders without the gunk build-up issue so don't be put-off but I personally find the above is the simplest, most effective option for me and my machine!

Thanks heaps! I have just found these ingredients sold in bulk on Trade Me so will look into making some purchases!
No problem :) I did reply to your comment as well in case you missed it.
I get my baking soda and washing soda in bulk from just outside New Plymouth - approx $25 for 25kg of B.Soda and approx $55 for $25kg of W.Soda. If you find that its working then buying in bulk is always the cheaper option :)
Let me know how you go!
You're a star - I had the same thing with my soapy home made washing powder, specially on the nappies! I know you can get borax etc at the bulk place here for a couple of dollars a kg :)
how frothy is it? we have a front loader and the froth kills them really quickly. we have to buy persil which is pricey as.
Liz its not frothy at all. Washing soda crystals aren't like soap in the sense they don't froth up however they do have better cleaning powers IMO. HTH :)
Thank you for keeping your site up, even though it looks like you are no longer writing here... it means people like me can still glean information off you, and hopefully make it work for us! After much research, I think your washing powder is going to be the cheapest and easiest to make and use - so here goes!!!!
